Supported Independent Living (SIL): What is it?
Simply put, supported independent living, NDIS is one of the many support services provided under the NDIS scheme that the participants can take advantage of. It is a service that is usually available as a part of a shared home; however, supported independent living providers like us offer a drop-in service for your personal home across Sydney. As the name suggests, SIL is a type of support provided to individuals with some kind of disability to live independently while building other skills. It is a paid facility with NDIS specialist support coordination that involves assistance with personal care, household chores, and other miscellaneous activities throughout the day and night.
Supported independent living in Sydney is suited for individuals who are above 18 years and require a significant amount of assistance throughout the day. In most cases, supported independent living accommodation is provided where you’ll be required to share the support with other NDIS participants. Besides, you may be eligible for NDIS support service if you live in:
- Private house
- Rental house
- House allotted through the Department of Housing & other services
- SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation)
How does it work?
The supported independent living works a little differently than other allowances and services under the NDIS scheme. For instance, most of the funding received under the NDIS scheme is credited in dollar amounts assigned to various categories and it is on the recipient to decide which provider he/she is willing to go forward with. Contrary to this, the SIL funding is granted with no exact assigned amount. For this, you need to talk to your NDIS plan support coordinator who will decide the level of support needed and the ideal service provider for you. Care Above All is one such NDIS registered service provider that ensures the highest quality service to our clients. Once your needs are determined, we will put in a quote that will cover all the essential and reasonable support costs.
The Support Levels
NDIS support coordinators play a vital role in determining the support that a recipient would need depending on factors like the level of support required by the individual, the number of people living in the shared room, etc. The SIL support requirements can be categorized into three levels that are as follows:
- Lower needs: If the NDIS support coordinator finds your support needs to be in the lower needs category, supervision of living arrangements is not provided 24*7.
- Standard needs: If your support needs fall under this category, you’ll be provided with 27*7 support that will include assistance/supervision of daily tasks and sleepovers.
- Higher needs: This is for those specially-abled people who struggle with challenging tasks and behaviors on a daily basis. This involves support in all daily activities, handling complex medical needs, and active support throughout the day and overnight. SIL providers undergo NDIS positive behavior support training to aid people with such special needs.
